  Photonics BW was founded in July 2000 within the framework of the »German Agenda – Optical
Technologies for the 21st Century« with the goal of promoting the optical technologies in the areas of research, development and application, basic and further training as well as the promotion of young people entering the field and public relations work. Photonics BW is a non-profit association and is sponsored by the
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Today, Photonics BW comprises 50 members from industry and science as well as the financing and consultancy industries. A further field of operations pursued by Photonics BW is its project sponsorship for the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg GmbH Foundation within the framework of the »Researching Optical Technologies« promotional program.

Photonics BW supports the Photonics Initiative East Wuerttemberg which not only includes companies, institutions, educational and training institutes but also WiRO as a key driving force.

The main objectives of Photonics BW are:

• Sustainable reinforcement of Baden-Wuerttemberg as a business location
